Fancy and easy to recycle paperboard packaging for chocolates

High-quality cardboard packaging replaces plastic

Metsä Board’s paperboard and packaging design expertise helped to develop a fancy packaging concept for Kultasuklaa, a Finnish family enterprise, that has been making hand-finished chocolates at its factory in Finland since the 1990’. The easily assembled chocolate package is made of recyclable dispersion-coated paperboard and uses a minimal amount of glue. The new packaging reduces the carbon footprint by 15% compared to PE-coated paperboard.

How it works in practice

With Metsä Board’s lightweight dispersion barrier-coated board, Kultasuklaa can pack its products in 100% recyclable packaging that does not require a PE coating. MetsäBoard Prime FBB EB is ideal for packaging chocolate, as the paperboard provides protection against grease and has neutral sensory properties. This ensures that the chocolate’s excellent taste remains even when packaged. The fresh fiber paperboard ensures safety for food and food service packaging.

Metsä Board’s dispersion barrier-coated paperboard can be recycled with paper or board. It is also biodegradable and has industrial and home compostability certifications.

Economic opportunities and broader social significance

Dispersion barrier coated paperboard can help reduce the use of plastic, has a lower carbon footprint and is easy to recycle. Biodegradable dispersion barrier coated paperboard can be easily made into light food and food service packaging at the converter, saving time as no separate barrier treatment is required.

Lightweight but strong paperboard helps to save resources and reduces the use of plastic, as well as supporting a circular economy. What makes this packaging innovative is its resource-efficient design, ease of assembly and easy recyclability. Paperboard is also made from renewable resources.
